Uninstructed life drawing employs a nude model. Each week there will
be one long pose. We alternate between male and female models.

M2 PRECIOUS METAL CLAY
Fee: $96 payable to City of LA, DCA
Intermediate and advanced class combining the use of PMC, basic jewelry
techniques, and mixed media. PMC looks, feels, and forms like ordinary
potter’s clay, but after firing, results in pure silver objects.
Create beads, rings, and other forms. Students will buy their own
clay and supplies. (Approx $100 - $200).

An instructed workshop for beginning to advanced students. Demonstrations

between form, surface and glaze. Individual instruction. Students will

Discover the age old secrets of this three dimensional art form.
Carve sculpture of human, animal, and abstract forms in full round
or relief.

work and finishing. Materials & tools bought in class.

T4 MIXED MEDIA

Explore art making through use of different media. Students will be
introduced to contemporary artists whose work represents the idea of
mixed media. Learn transfer techniques, principals of design and explore
paint and materials. More advanced students can work on projects of
their own proposal. Bring magazines or books, scissors, and glue to
the first class.

A clay class covering all aspects of hand-building, wheel and decorative
sculpture. Emphasis is on construction, design and glazing. Goals
include several completed projects. Individual and group instruction
is available on all levels. Learn to make slabs by hand and roller.

W3 BEGINNING/INTERMEDIATE WATERCOLOR

This class is for beginning and intermediate watercolor students
(or returning after a few years sabbatical) who wish to learn or
relearn the wonders, joys, techniques and skills of watercolor painting.
Each week the class will explore a technique such as dry application,
wet, color mixing. Last two weeks students will be exploring on their
own what they have learned. Students will use professional tube watercolors.
Students buy their own supplies (up to $100)

This fun and creative hands-on class provides instruction on cutting
and breaking of glass, tiles, dishes and construction of finished
piece. Learn and develop direct and indirect basic mosaic-making
techniques. Design and create mosaic mirrors, tabletops, stepping-stones,
etc. Students buy their own supplies.

This life drawing class is designed for students interested in developing
the basics of gesture, contour, composition, positive and negative
space; while exploring materials such as pencil, charcoal and pastel.
Bring a 16”x24” pad of newsprint, a pencil, and an eraser
to the first night.

W7 PHOTOGRAPHY

Introduction to Black and White Photography gives students an opportunity
to capture images through various projects and collaborations. We
will develop our own film, as well as printing and exploring various
printing techniques such as sepia toning, filters, dodging and burning,
and sandwiching. The class also covers lighting, portraiture technique,
and critique. Please bring a camera to first class.

Learn to quickly and efficiently make and solder jump rings and explore
a variety of chain making patterns, including ones of your own creation.

and wish to further develop their skills and techniques. Individual and
self directed projects, group and individual critiques. Students will use
professional tube watercolors. Students buy their own supplies (up to $100).

Students will be introduced to a variety of stone setting options and will
be encouraged to incorporate them into finished jewelry designs. Basic

TH4 PRINTMAKING

The class presents a range of printmaking processes: intaglio, relief,
monoprint, and transfer techniques. Students are encouraged to use the
language of printmaking for the development of imagery and expression.
A historical and contemporary overview of printmaking is shared in the
first class. Water and oil based inks are used. Instructor works one-on-one
with students. No previous printmaking experience necessary.

F5 LIVE MODEL FIGURE PAINTING/OIL

Prerequisite: Basic Drawing Skills
All levels are welcome. This class focuses on the fundamentals of figure
painting using the technique of alla prima (a single application of
pigments). Instruction covers color mixing, preparation of painting
grounds, the use of limited palette with an emphasis on light and shadow.
Students work directly from models and are guided in developing perceptual
skills and painting from life. They begin with quick painting sketches
which record light, color, and flesh tones in simple planes of color.
Later in the session, longer poses, and more complex compositions are
emphasized.

F6 INTRODUCTION TO MIDDLE EASTERN DRUMMING

Wael Kakish, the artistic director of Kan Zaman Community Ensemble,
will teach classical and folk rhythm patterns from the Middle East,
Egypt, and Gulf countries. Learn to play Darabukka (Egyptian tabla),
Rigg (fish skin tambourine) and Tar (rame drum) or bring your own.

F7 EXPLORING COMPUTER ART

Using primarily the innovative Photoshop program, with a brief introduction
to Illustrator later in the session, the class will creatively explore
painting, drawing, coloring, filters, hues, and tones-all in the digital
domain of the computers of the JAC Digital Studio. Students will also
learn to manipulate photography (and restoring photographs). This class
is a good introduction to digital creation on the computer and a good
refresher to learn more. No previous experience is necessary, although
some students work on projects on their own computers at home.

In this oil painting class the emphasis will be on bringing the studio
into the outdoors. Study and paint the landscape using techniques that
will address basic painting issues. Some techniques we will learn and
apply are; color theory, color temperature, atmospheric perspective,
and how to create an under painting to stop time and movement. Bring
paints and canvas to first class. Individual and group critiques.

Join this exciting hands-on introduction to alternative photographic
processes in a workshop environment. All of these techniques
are very 19th century itself-salted paper prints, Van Dyke Brown
Prints,
Cyanotypes
and Albumen Prints. Using a “kitchen cookbook” approach,
learn to create unique hand crafted images from ready available
materials and common household supplies. No previous photographic
experience
is necessary, but curiosity and a willingness to experiment
are mandatory. All materials supplied.

Learn the basics of quick sketch landscape painting. Composition, color,
wash, dry and wet techniques will be discussed. Bring water, sunscreen,
hat, watercolor easel (only if you have one) low beach folding chair,
watercolors, sharpie pen, pencil, eraser, watercolor block (3-5 pages),
brushes, water containers. We will paint from 12:00-3:30pm with critique
from 3:30-4:00pm.
